Modeling and Analysis of Complex Systems Design Processes

I studied how multiple autonomous teams with local objectives can coordinate to design and develop complex systems. I set up models of teams as agents and used dynamic programming approaches together with decision theory and value-based design approach to model the teams’ local decision making. I also setup models of interaction across levels of system hierarchy.

Modeling of Airline Network Structure Decisions

We developed a random utility based discrete choice analysis method to model the evolution of complex endogenous networks as a result of the decision-making of its constituent autonomous nodes. The goal was to study how the decisions and interactions of these nodes affects network structure and ultimately its performance. We demonstrated the application of the framework to airlines’ decision-making on route-selection problems and passengers’ selection of an itinerary from among available options.

Assessing Environmental Impact of Aviation

We developed a Matlab based tool for measuring system-wide environmental impact of aviation. The tool uses a mixed integer programming approach to model airlines’ fleet allocation decisions under various technological, economic, and policy scenarios. The tool’s system dynamics-inspired framework includes modules for aviation market demand growth, airline decisions on aircraft retirement and acquisition, and simulation of airline competition.
